Northwest ISD recognizes student champions and highlights NEF support
Summary
The board recognized athletic and CTE achievements and heard the Northwest Education Foundation report on grants, scholarships and resource‑store activity. Byron Nelson softball and track teams, Eaton High School CTE groups (national champions), and NEF impact metrics were spotlighted.
Trustees used part of the meeting to honor student achievement across athletics and career‑tech programs and to hear the Northwest Education Foundation’s annual effectiveness report.
Athletics: Executive director of athletics Joel Johnson recognized Byron Nelson High School’s softball team for setting program records and winning the district championship and noted the boys track team’s success—district and regional titles and second place in the state—highlighting individual UIL medalists and a 6A state long-jump champion.
CTE and national competitions: Eaton High School’s BME Academy teams won national championships at the Virtual Enterprises Youth Business Summit in finance and marketing categories for their projects (the “pop top” reusable can-top product and the “polar patch” wearable cooling product). Students and teachers associated with those teams were acknowledged by the board.
Northwest Education Foundation: NEF reported awarding 162 student scholarships totaling about $225,900, distributing 33 grants across 22 campuses and expanding programming (resource store, kinder club, bilingual materials). NEF said its resource-store program saved educators roughly $936,320 in classroom purchases this year and described new partnerships and fundraising activities that will continue next year.
What’s next: the board thanked NEF and community partners and welcomed Sloan Heath as the new principal of Daniel Elementary School. NEF leaders signaled continued support for district priorities and offered to coordinate advocacy efforts when the district engages with state lawmakers.
