Atwater police list drones, rifles and command vehicle in annual military-equipment report; council accepts

The Atwater Police Department presented its annual military equipment report on June 8 as required under Assembly Bill 481, listing the department’s inventory and use policy and asking the council to accept the report.
The Police Chief said the department did not procure additional items in 2025 and summarized equipment on hand: one DJI Mavic Model 3T unmanned aerial system, a 24-foot command-post vehicle used for incident coordination, 36 AR-15 patrol rifles (5.56 semi-automatic) authorized for officers who completed a POST-certified patrol-rifle class, one M4 select-fire rifle (5.56) kept for members assigned to the Merced County SWAT team, two semi-automatic training rifles for range use, two 40mm single-shot launchers and one 37mm single-shot launcher (training-authorized), a reloadable distraction device, and four less-lethal shotguns. Detective Sam Parks, the department’s range master, was present to answer technical questions.
The council moved to accept the report on a motion by Council Member Raymond, seconded by Council Member Rochester; the vote was unanimous.
The presentation was informational and part of the department’s transparency obligations under state law; no changes to policy or procurement were proposed at the meeting.
