LaPorte County Soil and Water board approves picnic-area project, hears planting and program updates

At its June 2 meeting, the LaPorte County Soil and Water Conservation District board approved the previous meeting minutes, accepted the treasurer’s report, approved claims (with an additional $300 EFT adjustment) and authorized a $1,000 terracing and picnic-area project for the prairie west of the district building.
District staff, who said they were the only staff member present, reported that crews and an intern had planted 75 oak trees at the local museum site and at Hitachi and that the trees were healthy and being maintained. Staff also said pollinator kits were nearly sold out and described pickup plans with partner Elizabeth, and noted Paul will present the Clean Water Project at an American Farmland Trust webinar on July 1.
On a funding note, a board member said the county appropriation of $7,100 had been deposited and the treasurer noted a $33,783 item had been posted to the wrong account and should be reclassified to the pollinator project account. The board agreed to move forward with the picnic-area terracing after hearing a JNL quote and approved allocating $1,000 for that work.
