Shelby Road reconstruction begins without prior notice; city says partners expedited work to finish before school

Council members were told June 9 that reconstruction work on Shelby Road began the previous day as a joint effort by the city of Fort Worth and Tarrant County Precinct One. Staff said the project is a reconstruction — not a widening — stretching from Forest Hill Drive to Race Street, and that crews are pulling extra resources to try to complete the work before the start of the school year.

The update came during the Everman City Council’s regular meeting. A staff member said the city was not notified in advance but called the unplanned start “a welcome surprise” because the road “is desperately needing some repairs.” The presenter credited Commissioner Miles and Fort Worth for accelerating the schedule and said county crews promised to expedite work.

Council members were told the scope is limited to reconstruction and the teams have committed additional crews to speed progress. Staff emphasized they had stressed the importance of finishing prior to the first day of school; the county commissioner’s office responded positively and agreed to accelerate crews.

Because the council was not formally notified before work began, staff said they would keep the council updated as the schedule is refined and as detours or traffic impacts are confirmed. The session did not include a formal motion or vote on the project; the report was informational.

The City will provide further information about lane closures, detours and the expected completion date as it receives updates from the county and Fort Worth.
