City schedules joint session with industry on telecommunications code update; Verda to discuss small‑scale wireless options

Jeff Watson, appearing online, told commissioners a joint session on Tuesday will include representatives from the telecommunications industry to present on technical advances and the proposed code amendment. "There will be a couple of people from the telecommunications industry, at the meeting on Tuesday night. We'll make presentations and, answer questions and engage in discussion," he said.
Watson said industry representatives generally view the proposed code amendment as "headed in the right direction" and that the session will allow commissioners and council members to ask technical questions and seek information needed so the council can give direction to staff and the planning commission.
Chair Hanson and commissioners raised questions about whether providers would invest in local infrastructure without revenue increases; Watson said one of the attendees, a hardware provider called Verda, works with carriers to install infrastructure and can explain which providers might be interested in Normandy Park and what equipment and market conditions would be required.
The joint session is intended to help the council decide whether to direct staff and the planning commission to proceed with the telecommunications code update.
