Mecca Township seeks $175,000; commissioners say ARPA funds nearly exhausted while a proposal to revisit owner-occupancy sales tax is set for future agenda
Summary
Mecca Township representatives asked the county for an additional ~$175,000 in ARPA funds for a community center; commissioners said ARPA and revenue-replacement funds are nearly depleted and asked staff for a detailed accounting. Separately, a commissioner announced plans to place an owner-occupancy sales-tax proposal on a future agenda to reduce taxes for homeowners.

Representatives of Mecca Township told commissioners they face a roughly $175,000 shortfall on a community center project funded in part by ARPA allocations and asked whether the county could provide additional support to allow the project to proceed and meet federal deadlines.
Commissioners said they are sympathetic but cautioned that available ARPA and revenue-replacement funds are nearly exhausted and that allocating additional funding to one township could raise expectations across other applicants. Finance staff agreed to produce a spreadsheet showing remaining ARPA and related balances so the board could decide with full information. Commissioners emphasized they would review the spreadsheet before committing new dollars and acknowledged awarding additional funds could prompt many other requests.
In a separate but related discussion about local tax policy, a commissioner announced an intent to place an agenda item in the coming weeks to reconsider an owner-occupancy sales-tax reduction now that a statewide ballot initiative to eliminate property taxes will not appear this fall. Commissioners agreed to put formal consideration on a future agenda and to include Commissioner Danzo (not present) in the discussion when he can participate.
No final funding decision was made at the meeting; commissioners asked staff to present account balances and return with options and potential implications for other priorities and projects.
