Chair members said the committee’s opposed position would allow the city to join a coalition led by the League of California Cities to coordinate a response. The chair said the city cannot take direct political action but council members, as individuals, can participate once the council adopts a formal position.
A member suggested the city consider authorizing the city attorney to participate in litigation or file amicus briefs to defend existing tax measures if necessary. Committee members noted a prior, similar measure had been blocked in court two years ago and discussed potential proactive legal options.
The committee approved the motion to recommend opposition by a 5-0 vote and indicated it would seek to coordinate through the League of California Cities and other partners on next steps; the item will next be before the full council for action.
