The Madison Common Council unanimously adopted a resolution recognizing June 19, 2026 as Juneteenth and Freedom Day, and presented proclamations to a group of youth leaders and community organizers. Several young honorees and their nominators described civic projects supported by neighborhood centers and nonprofit partners. Deja May described running summer programs and meal distribution at a neighborhood center; Kenzeria Patterson and Atavia Johnson were honored for youth leadership and engagement; Dana Crowder spoke about music education and supporting LGBTQ youth in community programs. Community elder Annie Weatherbe Flowers reflected on intergenerational Juneteenth traditions and the local organizing that sustains the annual celebration.
President Madison noted the proclamation was moved and seconded and the council recorded a unanimous vote. The council also acknowledged the Juneteenth flag had been raised in the city earlier in June.
