Charlestown EAC lines up fall festival activities, secures semiquincentennial market table and reviews conservation projects

At its May 11 meeting, the Charlestown Township Environmental Advisory Committee reviewed a slate of outreach and conservation projects and assigned members to follow up on homeowner engagement and grant research.
The committee discussed the Charlestown Fall Festival scheduled for Oct. 17, 11 a.m.–3 p.m. Visitor Tienfong Ho from the Phoenixville Green Team proposed a hands-on children’s activity (a self-contained biosphere) and offered handouts and a sub‑irrigation planter idea; Faith Talnack and Chair Carol Armstrong volunteered to help develop activities. Committee members also confirmed an EAC table at the Charles Towne Market semiquincentennial celebration on July 18 (table and two chairs granted) and were given the contact email (Charlestownpa250@gmail.com) for follow-up.
Members reviewed ongoing environmental programs: Sarah Pickering, Armstrong and Pete Goodman will visit interested homeowners to discuss increasing stream canopy on private properties and will research potential grant funding; the township indicated it can route grant applications through township staff. The Battery Box program’s battery collection remains strong, the committee said.
Pete Goodman reported that volunteers inspected seven active Kestrel boxes and found eggs in all of them, and the EAC discussed collaborating with neighboring townships on grassland habitat work. The committee also completed a community education survey postcard (with a QR code and Google Form) to distribute at upcoming events and at the township building to gauge resident interest in future education topics.
On organizational business, the EAC noted it will not renew its WeConservePA membership for 2026 and will reassess renewal in 2027; members said this should be included in future budget planning. Several Parks & Recreation members have resigned, and the Planning Commission is reviewing model ordinances from other townships regarding zoning for a proposed data center in nearby East Whiteland Township.
