Hampton Township adopts 2026 budget; residents told tax change will be modest

Township Auditor John Mooney of Nisivoccia presented the 2026 Hampton Township municipal budget and the committee voted unanimously to adopt it at the April 28 meeting.
Mooney said the budget ‘‘results in an approximate $0.05 increase to the local tax rate,’’ which he illustrated as ‘‘an estimated increase of about $9.66 per month’’ for a home with an average assessed value of $230,000. He attributed most of the increase to higher health insurance premiums, overtime from snow removal operations and rising solid-waste collection costs, and said those drivers were largely outside municipal control.
The auditor noted the township remains within both the State levy cap and expenditure cap and that the governing body applied approximately $611,000 in surplus to the budget to reduce the tax impact. Mooney also said capital funding was scaled back because of prior major purchases, including a recently acquired fire truck, with plans to address capital needs in future budgets.
Public comment on the budget was solicited and none was offered before the committee moved to adoption. Committeeman P. Yetter made the motion to adopt, seconded by Committeewoman E. Klose; the roll-call vote was Committeeman D. Hansen: yes; Committeewoman E. Klose: yes; Committeeman E. Ramm: yes; Committeeman P. Yetter: yes; Mayor T. Dooley: yes. The motion carried.
The adoption will allow staff to proceed with budget administration and with planned capital applications, including the township’s intended NJDOT grant submission for 2027 road work.
