Catawba County Schools recognizes All-State clarinetist and regional robotics team

Dr. McCreary recognized Avery Powers, an eighth grader at Mill Creek Middle School, who earned 13th-chair clarinet for the North Carolina All-State middle school band; the presenter said only about 70 middle-school students across the state were selected for the ensemble.
The board also recognized the Mechanical Minds robotics team, a group that grew to 38 members across four high schools and won an Impact Award and a Team Sustainability Award at regional events. Presenter Jonathan Loss recounted that strong performance at the state level led to a partnership that qualified the team for the FIRST World Championship in Houston; community fundraising raised approximately $36,000 to send students to the competition. Loss described the robot as a 120-pound system that required contributions from programming, mechanical, electrical and business teams and thanked mentors and community supporters.
Board members applauded the students and mentors; the recognitions were presented before the regular business agenda.
