The committee debated options for a private-tree inventory to better understand canopy distribution. Members reported an estimated ground-survey cost of roughly $8 per tree and proposed a phased or hybrid approach combining aerial imagery (LIDAR or high-resolution satellite/drone data) with targeted ground-truthing in priority areas. Members suggested pursuing partnerships (federal partners, nonprofit or Google/industry programs) to obtain higher-resolution imagery at lower cost.
On outreach, the group reviewed plans for youth engagement and community events: the Minecraft judging for local schoolchildren (submissions due Aug. 1), a Marsh Oaks community garden grand-opening (targeting October, pending construction) and an awards ceremony discussion for November (possibly in partnership with ARC). The committee also reviewed a film/speaker series (a prerecorded Douglas Tallamy talk with live Q&A) and discussed attendance, timing and modest event budgets; one recent film-panel event had 23 attendees and a low per-event cost in the hundreds.
