Jason, who leads the recreation effort, presented a review of the fiscal-year events and flagged payroll (especially public safety staffing) as the biggest cost driver.
"We have over 30 events we ran this past fiscal year. The total cost of running those events was about 354,000, and we had about $70,000 in revenue. So that's a net program cost of about $285,000," Jason said.
He noted that five major events account for roughly 60% of the department’s event budget, with the Fourth of July the largest single driver. Trustees praised the report for improving transparency and asked staff to examine ways to slim down costs, pursue sponsorships, and consider consolidating or resizing events that have low return on investment.
Jason said staff will work with department leadership and trustees during the budget cycle to recommend efficiency measures while preserving the most popular community events.
