Trustee urges ban on loose street leaf piles, board to seek DPW input

Trustee Silver introduced a proposal to revise Chapter 200–5f of the village code to prohibit open loose leaf piles on streets and require residents to place leaves in paper or compostable bags or containers.
“I think having the leaves pile up in these piles on our streets during leaf season ... is a safety hazard,” Trustee Silver said, citing narrow streets, obstructed parking and the risk of clogging catch basins used for flood mitigation.
Board members said they support the goal but asked Public Works (DPW) to weigh in on operational details: where bags would be stored if not placed in the street, collection frequency, overtime implications and whether bags would hold up in rain. Trustees noted parts of the village already use bag collection and suggested residents leave bags on private property rather than in the street.
The Mayor and other trustees agreed to invite James from DPW to a future meeting so the board can review implementation options and costs before any ordinance change is proposed.
