Commission highlights summer events, park investments and new Corona Education Center plan
Summary
Commissioners heard reports on an expanded summer events calendar (Fourth of July parade, Summer Street Fairs, Movies in the Park), Sheridan Park reopening, City Park revitalization, the forthcoming Corona Education Center (Riverside Community College District), new Skyline Trail parking and park maintenance innovations including robotic weed abatement and branded trash cans.
Staff presented a multi-part community services update that previewed summer programming, capital investments and operational changes across the city's parks.
Miss Finch opened the report, then introduced the recreation services manager and the city's acting parks and trails manager, Paul Lchenberger. Staff said the Riverside Community College District (RCCD) has committed to a Corona Education Center — described on the record as the Corona Education Center — with an aspirational final completion date cited as 2030. Staff also reviewed the City Park revitalization plan, describing new features such as an aquatic center, outdoor performance space, play areas and a splash pad.
The commission heard program specifics: the Fourth of July parade will start at 9:00 a.m. on Main Street with a later fireworks show at 9:00 p.m.; registration packets are available for pickup and registrations close June 18. Staff listed a lineup of Summer Street Fair headliners and confirmed Movies in the Park will run weekly in July with titles and locations provided.
Staff reported operational updates: the Skyline Trail parking project added over 40 parking spaces to relieve Foothill Parkway demand; a robotic weed-abatement machine was trialed across multiple parks; and branded trash can installations were completed at Fairview, Sheridan and Victoria parks with remaining parks scheduled. Volunteer metrics included roughly 310 active volunteers contributing nearly 8,000 hours since January 2026; the city's Corona Beautiful cleanup reported more than 50 volunteers and over three yards of debris collected at a recent event. Youth sports numbers were noted (spring soccer: 16 teams and 146 participants).
Commissioners asked clarifying questions about turnout for senior programs, registration and calendar availability on the CivicRec platform, and asked for shareable images to promote events. Staff said most events are drop-in, some have modest fees for supplies, and registration helps plan supplies and attendance. Commissioners thanked staff and encouraged public participation.
The commission adjourned and will next meet on Tuesday, August 11 at 6 p.m.
