Winchester board deletes outdated polices and accepts food-service contract changes

The Winchester Board of Education advanced two formal actions at its meeting: moving to delete a slate of older, redundant policies and approving a negotiated contract for school lunch employees.

Policy and Bylaws committee members recommended repealing 14 policies adopted between the 1990s and 2014 that legal counsel said were either no longer required, duplicated statute, or outdated. The superintendent noted Shipman’s review that many of the policies merely restated state law or have been superseded. The board moved and seconded deletion of A1–A14 and proceeded to process the committee’s recommendation.

On labor matters, the board reviewed changes to the food-service employees’ contract. Highlights included a 3% annual wage increase, an increase to the uniform shoe reimbursement limit (from $150 to $175), an adjustment to a retirement-notice bonus eligibility window, payment for ServeSafe certification for designated employees, and an additional personal day for employees achieving 90 consecutive scheduled workdays during the year. The union ratified the contract; the board moved to accept the ratified changes and approved the contract.

Administration said the fiscal impact was budgeted in the district’s reserves and that the specific total cost figure would be circulated to board members. The district plans to provide a follow-up memo with the precise dollar increase for FY27. Board members thanked food-service staff and emphasized the value of improving working conditions to support consistent service for students.

The board concluded those agenda items and adjourned after brief public remarks and statements of appreciation for staff and volunteers.
