The New Albany-Floyd County Board approved a pilot Virtual Academy for the 2026-27 school year, using the Edgenuity platform and an internal teacher model, the board heard on June 8.
Amy Cook, who presented the proposal, said 34 families had completed intents to enroll and that the district would house a single teacher at the ASC with counseling support shared between New Albany and Floyd Central high schools. Cook provided preliminary finances: expected funding of $179,200, projected costs of $132,800 (including an estimated teacher compensation of $100,000 and $16,000 for Chromebooks), and a potential net of $46,400 if the enrollment estimate holds.
Board members asked how the teacher would be selected (internally posted, preferred a core-subject teacher), what oversight and monitoring would look like for testing, and how workload would be managed for a single full-day teacher. Cook said teachers would check in with students twice daily, monitor exam sessions via Block C, and provide one-on-one support by appointment.
After discussion and clarifying questions on staff selection and cost assumptions, the board voted 7-0 to approve the Virtual Academy pilot. Administration said it will continue planning enrollment, staffing and parent communications before classes begin.
