Brian Head RDA extends interlocal agreement with Iron County; County reduces tax-increment share

The Brian Head Redevelopment Agency Board adopted a resolution on May 12 extending its interlocal agreement with Iron County for another ten years and adjusting the county’s share of tax increment.

Town Manager Bret Howser told the Council and board that Iron County had agreed to extend its participation in the RDA but requested that its contribution be reduced from 60 percent of its tax increment to 30 percent, a change that reduces the RDA’s expected annual increment revenue by roughly $67,500. The County Commission approved its portion of the interlocal agreement earlier that morning.

Howser also said the Iron County School District has indicated a willingness to discuss participation but its finance committee will not meet until August, which places any school-district involvement outside the current property-tax cycle. Howser said that if the school district ultimately agreed to participate at 30 percent with a base year set at the current year, the resulting new increment revenue would likely more than offset the county’s reduction.

Council Member Larry Freeberg moved to adopt Resolution No. 26-574 approving the interlocal agreement, and Council Member Logan Cruz seconded the motion. The board vote carried 5-0.

Howser described the RDA as a strategic tool for supporting future commercial development, including a potential skier base village, and noted the town already holds land that could support parking or infrastructure tied to such a project.
