Commission defers Williamson Medical Center board appointment after competing nominations

Commissioner Greg Lawrence nominated Rob Wampler, who described more than 35 years of healthcare executive experience and said he could help the county navigate a potential sale or governance change for the hospital. The incumbent nominee, Wanita Patton, was not present but has a bio included in the commissioners’ packet; supporters spoke in favor of her long local service and nonprofit involvement.
Commissioner Chaz Morton explained the budget committee’s preference to defer and forgive certain school debt in related business and said the commission should allow the hospital‑board nomination to be vetted. After discussion and a motion from Commissioner Clifford to defer to July 13, the commission voted 15–6 to postpone the appointment. Several commissioners asked that both nominees appear in July so the body could hear directly from each candidate.
The deferral preserves the incumbent’s service in the interim per the board’s bylaws and gives time for commissioners to review candidate materials and hear directly from Wanita Patton and Rob Wampler at the July meeting.
