Board accepts resignation of long-serving chair Seth Klaskin; Emily Rosenthal elected chair

The Madison Board of Education accepted the resignation of board member and outgoing chair Seth Klaskin, who will step down effective June 18, 2026 at 4 p.m. The motion to accept the resignation was seconded and approved by voice vote.
Chair Klaskin addressed trustees at length in a farewell that reviewed his 17 years of service, the district27s accomplishments and his gratitude for administrators and staff. "It's been a high honor, a true privilege to serve on this board for those 17 years," he said, and he praised district leaders including curriculum staff and administrators.
The board then moved to elect new leadership. The chair placed Emily Rosenthal27s name into nomination and trustees seconded the nomination; Rosenthal was elected effective June 19, 2026. Several trustees expressed confidence in continuity of leadership and praised the outgoing chair27s nonpartisan approach.
On fiscal matters the board authorized finance committee chair Galen to close out the 2024-25/2025-26 fiscal year directly with the finance director; the superintendent reported additional special education reimbursements that had improved the projected year-end position (discussed in the range of $137,000 to roughly $200,000 in the discussion).
The board approved the minutes of the May 26, 2026 meeting and voted unanimously to enter executive session at 8:11 p.m. to discuss the superintendent27s evaluation and central office contract, inviting Superintendent Dr. Craig Cook to participate for part of that session.
The meeting then moved into executive session.
