The Buchanan City Commission on June 8 approved consideration of vacating undeveloped public right-of-way areas in the Hobart Street and South Red Bud Trace neighborhood.
Staff explained the rationale: the city does not plan to construct utilities or pave roadways across the railroad tracks to serve the parcels, and maintaining the strips created ongoing maintenance liabilities. Under the proposal, abandoned strips would generally be divided 50/50 between adjacent property owners. Staff said a center corridor would not be abandoned so that rear properties would retain access should they seek future development. The approval was made subject to legal review, required public notice, reservation of necessary utility easements, and completion of appropriate documentation.
Commissioners asked questions about the map and how the right-of-way would be split; staff displayed the area and described the 50/50 division along the abandoned strips. The motion passed with direction to complete legal review and public-notice requirements.
Next steps: staff will complete legal review, prepare public notices, and return with final documentation for formal recording if the vacation is finalized.
