Thomasville council declares VFW building surplus, donates park bleachers and approves multiple personnel moves

The Thomasville City Council on Monday approved an ordinance to declare the former VFW building at 5550 Highway 5 South surplus and authorized steps toward its sale, the town attorney said.
Glenn, the town attorney, told the council "you have before you a, an ordinance to declare the old VFW building at 5550 Highway 5 South as a surplus property" and recommended obtaining an appraisal before listing the property. The council suspended the rules for immediate consideration and approved Ordinance 2026-2 by unanimous voice vote.
Council also approved Resolution 2026-6, declaring four sets of bleachers removed from Gates Park surplus and authorizing donation of two sets to the town of Fulton and sale of the remaining two. "There's a recommendation that two of those sets be donated to the town of Fulton," Glenn said; the measure passed unanimously.
On personnel matters, the council approved several staffing actions presented by Glenn and the personnel board. Motions approved included posting a police vacancy to replace Ben Davies, hiring Ty Hunter as a part-time officer (grade 9, step 7) with a six-month probationary period, and hiring Curtis Gissendanner as a full-time police officer (grade 8, step 6) with six months probation.
The council approved a pay increase for Corporal Michael C. to grade 11, step 3. A separate motion regarding a pay increase for Officer Brittney (Bridal) Alexander was recorded during the meeting and later found to contain incorrect information; the council postponed that specific pay action until corrected and re-submitted at the next meeting.
The clerk presented the bills and the minutes of the May 11 meeting; both were approved by voice vote and recorded as unanimous.
What matters next: the town will obtain an appraisal before listing the VFW property for sale, staff will resubmit corrected personnel paperwork where required, and the council will revisit postponed pay actions at a later meeting.
