Marion County outlines timeline to complete NextGen 911 migration

Marion County's 9-1-1 management director on Tuesday updated commissioners on the county's migration to NextGen 911, saying circuits and backroom equipment are in place and carrier migration and testing have begun.
Michelle Sanders, 9-1-1 management director, told the board that phase 2 (carrier migration and testing) is underway and that carriers are moving onto the county's InDigital network; she reported T-Mobile was testing the morning of the meeting and said the county is about halfway through the carrier migration. "Once phase 2 is complete, we will see improved communication channels," Sanders said, noting NextGen 911 will allow receipt of texts, images and video, improve location accuracy using GPS and Wi-Fi, and strengthen interoperability between communication centers.
Sanders said she hopes to have carrier migration and testing completed by the end of the summer, and if testing is successful she will request decommissioning of the legacy system in January 2027. Commissioners urged staff to press carriers to migrate promptly after several recent outages and directed staff to pursue measures that accelerate migration where possible.
