Board approves Baldwin Park Animal Care Center upgrades and spay/neuter support

The Board on June 9 approved a package of improvements for the Baldwin Park Animal Care Center, including funding for medical equipment, public waiting-area upgrades and spay/neuter vouchers aimed at reducing future shelter intakes.
Supervisor Hilda Solis said Baldwin Park's center is the county's busiest and that residents rely on low-cost veterinary supports, vaccinations and lost-and-found services. "A clean animal is not only more hygienic but more likely to be adopted," she said, announcing discretionary funds to buy needed medical gear and to expand voucher programs.
Marcia Mayeda, director of Animal Care and Control, said the upgrades will speed diagnostics, expand humane housing and improve the visitor experience, and that added spay/neuter vouchers will prevent unwanted litters and reduce long-term demand on shelters.
Volunteers and nonprofit partners urged support, noting improvements would increase adoptions, reduce stress on animals and improve outcomes across the system. The Board approved the measures and related items (item 18 and 2D) by unanimous vote (4-0).
