At its Feb. 27 session in City Hall the Joplin Building Board of Appeals continued progress‑report or demolition hearings for numerous properties, scheduling follow‑ups for the March 27 meeting and urging visible progress from owners.
Throughout the meeting staff and property representatives described a common pattern: permits pulled but work incomplete, contractors engaged or sought, and in a few cases buildings listed for sale. For example, an owner speaking about 31041909 West 15th Street said the structure has its roof and sheathing in place and the plumbing rough‑in is pending, and he expected to finish before his May permit expiration. Staff recommended continuing the item to allow inspections and progress checks.
Several properties were reported as listed with Keller Williams and in one case the owner said he had bids and electricians lined up and intended to reconstruct an older house for family use rather than sell. The board uniformly continued most items to March 27 for progress reports or demolition hearings, and reminded owners that visible, verifiable progress will influence future decisions.
New business included a report about repeated fires at 122 North Maple (January 7, February 9 and a subsequent shed fire); staff noted a police report is in the file. That item was continued automatically to the next meeting as new business, per board practice.
The board closed after confirming it would revisit several specific items — including 921 West 5th — at the March 27 meeting.
The March 27 docket will list progress reports and any demolition hearings for the continued addresses; owners and contractors were asked to provide photographs, permits, or on‑site timelines in support of progress claims.
