Board approves hearing officers, renews regional alliance membership and flags $271,642 added cost for McGraw Hill social studies adoption

The West Allis-West Milwaukee School Board on June 8 approved its annual independent hearing-officer agreement for student expulsion hearings and voted to continue membership in the Southeastern Wisconsin Schools Alliance.
The superintendent introduced the hearing-officer recommendation, listing three attorneys as independent hearing officers and naming an emergency fallback. "They will serve as true independent non um impartial I should say persons to uh oversee our uh our hearings," the superintendent said while describing the role of the recommended attorneys. The board moved, seconded and approved the agreement by voice vote.
On the intergovernmental agreement, a board member asked about the membership cost; the presenter located the amount in the materials (listed as "3700"). The board moved, seconded and the motion passed.
Separately, the College & Career Readiness committee reported an error in a previously provided quote for the McGraw Hill social studies curriculum adoption. Committee members said the original quote had been calculated only for pilot students and omitted the district's full secondary population; the corrected total is $451,843, an increase of $271,642 over the initial figure. The board was told it would be asked to review and consider the additional amount at a future meeting.
The superintendent also introduced the district's new director of student services, Terresa Moritech, who said she has 25 years in public education and will prioritize continuity of services as she transitions into the role.
The board then moved into executive session under Wisconsin Statute section 19.85(1)(g) to confer with legal counsel about strategy on a DPI boundary appeal.
