Westonka plans EMT course, nursing-assistant program with Monarch and $99,000 youth-skills grant

The Westonka Public School District briefed the board on new career-education programs intended to give students industry exposure and local clinical training sites.
Mark (teaching and learning) told the board the district submitted its Office of Emergency Medical Services application, expects equipment delivery and has scheduled an inspection for June 18. "That will unlock that EMT grant of $79,000 and we can start spending money," he said, describing the certification as the final step before launching the EMT pathway.
On nursing assistants, staff described a planned agreement with Monarch Healthcare to supply the required nurse and clinical site for the nurse-aid program. The district characterized the Monarch participation as no cost to the district and said Monarch has run similar high-school partnerships for at least four to five years. The Monarch relationship is a discussion item on the meeting agenda; the formal agreement was not voted on during the session.
District staff also said a youth-skills training grant will bring about $99,000 over two years to support machining and nursing programs that connect students with vocational businesses. Staff announced that Caitlyn Peglo will join the district on June 15 as the medical-careers instructor; Peglo previously trained in the district and will split time as a trainer to help staff other programs while building enrollment.
Officials said they will continue outreach to local clinical partners, including Presbyterian Homes and other facilities, to expand placement options for students.
