Urbana HRC officer reports closed complaint, elevator fix and presentation to City Council on surveillance ordinance

The officer also reported field coordination with the City of Urbana building inspectors after a caller raised concerns about a malfunctioning apartment elevator; inspectors worked with the property manager and the elevator was repaired. The officer said they provided the caller with chapter 12.5 materials on landlord-tenant relationships.
On civic engagement, the officer said they attended a reception in the council chambers for students from Thionville, France (a sister city), and that Chair Panthier and the officer presented the Human Rights Commission's statement to the City Council concerning the surveillance technology ordinance, followed by a question-and-answer session. A civilian police review board member also attended and provided the civilian board's statement at council.
The officer noted recent participation in a University of Illinois strategic goals focus group and attendance at the Champaign County community coalition meeting, encouraging commissioners to attend coalition sessions to build connections with local organizations.
Commissioners discussed recruitment: earlier in the meeting the commission was told there were three vacancies, and later clarified that vacancies are up to four due to recent departures; one application is under review with the mayor and a meeting with the applicant is being scheduled. The commission confirmed its next meeting for May 19, 2026, at 5:30 p.m., and adjourned.
