Fayette County board clears conveyance of school property for Legacy Trail project

The Fayette County Board of Education on June 8 directed the County School District Finance Corporation to join the board in conveying a portion of a middle‑school site to the Lexington–Fayette Urban County Government for the Legacy Trail educational plaza. The motion, which includes filing an initial BG1 application (BG number 26‑396) and authorizing related signatories subject to Kentucky Department of Education approval, passed unanimously.

Superintendent Dr. Liggins described the conveyance as part of a long‑standing collaboration with community partners including Friends Toward Freedom and said the transfer supports an expanded educational plaza near the Lewis and Harriet Hayden statue adjacent to Lexington Middle School. Chief Operating Officer Myron Thompson notified the board during the planning work session of corrected parcel details received from the local government: the area to be conveyed was updated from the originally announced 729 square feet to 1,168 square feet, and staff noted the sale amount described in late materials differs from earlier figures; the agenda will be amended for the June 22 action meeting to reflect the corrected numbers.

The board’s motion, made and seconded during the finance corporation meeting that preceded the planning session, also authorized the superintendent to sign subsequent related documents and reserved execution of any deeds to the board chair upon formal board approval. The finance corporation and board votes were recorded as unanimous. No public objections were raised during the planning session; the matter will appear on the June 22 action agenda with updated exhibit material.

Procedural details: the finance corporation portion of the meeting opened, approved the May 11 minutes, heard the presentation on the proposed conveyance, and passed a resolution to proceed; the planning session later adopted an amended agenda and repeated the motion to direct the finance corporation to join the conveyance action. Staff emphasized that the BG1 application and the final deed execution remain subject to KDE and board approvals.
