Board approves nearly $860,000 MDA renovation after debate over disclosure

Officials said about 20 special-education staff will move to Puma and the remaining staff to the MDA; the work includes code-related storage upgrades, secure lobby construction consistent with other district sites, targeted HVAC and lighting modifications and other building improvements.
Carney pressed why the estimated cost — roughly $860,000 from Plant Fund 500 — was not presented earlier in the repurposing discussions. Board members and the superintendent said an earlier planning estimate carried in materials was about $300,000 but final contractor quotes and some code/security requirements pushed the number higher. Vice President Mike Shy and others noted rising construction costs as a factor.
Member Warner voiced concern that the nearly $1 million renovation expense had not been clearly called out when the board considered campus closures and the related consolidation plan, saying the public deserved earlier disclosure. The superintendent responded that the plan to move staff to the MDA was communicated while the specific cost estimate was not finalized until recent contractor proposals and permitting work were completed.
The motion to authorize the expenditure passed 4–1 after Member Carney and several trustees debated whether additional review or alternatives (such as placing some staff in school sites) had been fully explored. District staff said they had considered other options but that the MDA offered the most practical location without requiring major retrofits to classroom buildings.
