Presenters from Simple Gesture told the Lake County Board of Supervisors on June 9 that a zip‑code organized, volunteer doorstep pickup program has rapidly scaled across the county and is helping local food pantries by providing a steady stream of nutritious pantry staples.
Founder Marie Schrader summarized program mechanics and outcomes, noting donors fill a marked bag of shelf‑stable items and volunteers pick it up on scheduled days; she reported, "In just a few short months, we have collected um more than 16,000 pounds of food and established a sustainable system that can continue growing for years to come." Schrader asked supervisors to help spread the word and to connect chapter leaders to local town halls and community groups.
Pastor Shannon (Shannon Kimbleoth) and other volunteers described how the program reduces food‑bank purchasing needs by directing donations to high‑demand nutritious items and said Redwood Credit Union and local partners helped provide bags and initial systems. Staff and board members discussed the program’s potential role in emergency prepositioning (for extreme heat or power outages) and agreed outreach and local chapter leadership are immediate needs.
The board offered to help publicize the program and some supervisors expressed interest in ride‑along pickups to observe operations. Simple Gesture requested modest county support for printing outreach materials and help recruiting a Clear Lake route leader.
