Schererville’s town council unanimously adopted Ordinance 2044A on June 9, updating the 2026 salary ordinance to reflect several job classifications and pay clarifications.
Among the changes, the ordinance adds an 800‑level classification in the street department that allows pay to be charged to the solid waste fund, clarifies that the fire chief and deputy chief can be paid from the ambulance fund (a practice reportedly already in use), and creates an electrical worker line item to enable the town to perform and compensate in‑house electrical work. The ordinance also revises the newsletter position to cover both design and writing responsibilities and adds three floating holidays for police department employees.
Council discussion was brief. Director of Operations Andy Hansen said staff and others moved quickly to secure the changes after grant and operational work; no council members requested amendments. The council approved the ordinance and its adoption by a 5–0 vote.
The ordinance also includes an overtime compensation provision tied to the CHRP (highway safety) program that allows officers to receive double time for certain traffic enforcement shifts and for the town to be reimbursed by the state for that overtime.
The measure takes effect as adopted; staff said they will ensure payroll and fund‑coding changes reflect the updates.
