Montoursville students awarded in Days of Remembrance essay contest; administrators recap graduation and summer projects

The Montoursville Area School Board opened its June 9 meeting by recognizing student winners of the district's Days of Remembrance essay contest and receiving superintendent and administrator updates on end-of-year activities and summer projects.
A guest introduced the contest and an eighth-grade English teacher who organized the effort said the prompt related to a quote about the Holocaust; the teacher told the board the contest drew 95 essays and about $21,200 in awards, and presented a $5,000 check tied to the Days of Remembrance activity. Student winners named in the meeting included Tempest Nichols (first place) and several honorable mentions.
During the superintendent’s report Mr. Wise highlighted two major year-end events: an awards ceremony that recognized 195 awards to graduating seniors and a graduation with 132 members of the senior class. Mr. Wise and other administrators thanked custodial and maintenance staff for their work on ceremonies and ongoing construction logistics. The administrators noted one graduate was absent because he was at Army Reserve basic training; staff accepted credentials on his behalf.
Administrators also updated the board on instructional and staffing items: the district reported growth in dual-enrollment participation (from single digits in early years to 24 students slated for the upcoming fall term), ongoing interviews to fill remaining teaching vacancies, device collection and inventory, and preparations for summer construction projects including cable runs for a commons project, gym floor refinishing and parking-lot sealing.
Special education staff reported 17 graduates with IEP/504 plans and described summer professional development opportunities coordinated with IU partners. Athletic and extracurricular leaders reviewed recent seasons, noted district representatives in the District 4 All-Star game, and previewed summer events.
The recognitions and reports were presented as information items; the board’s formal votes during the meeting covered consent agenda, finance and the budget vote later in the session.
