Board members ask for detailed retirements and open-positions tracking

At the June 9 personnel committee meeting, Elizabeth proposed a standardized, monthly spreadsheet to track retirements and resignations and to help the board evaluate which positions to refill.
“I would like to see…years of service, their ending wage and salary, and then another column stating whether the position's been filled or not filled, and then a priority column 1, two, and three,” Elizabeth said, adding that a summary total of salary savings would be useful for board review.
Some members warned against excessive detail. Bill said the proposed level of reporting veered toward micromanaging, calling it “adding work for people to do,” and suggested a simpler summary would suffice. Staff proposed a compromise: a shared, ongoing document that lists departures, the position involved, whether it will be posted or attritioned, and the board-agenda date.
Staff noted the retirements/resignations list covered the current school year (Aug. 26 through June 30). They also said the district had reduced its head count by attrition, eliminating 19 positions, and that certain specialized roles (for example, speech or special-education positions) remain open longer because certification requirements limit the candidate pool.
Committee members asked staff to include the original posting dates for open positions so the board can see which jobs have been open longest and assess whether wage competitiveness or benefit design is hampering recruitment. One member raised that food-service and custodial roles are part-time and that the transcript records the hourly rate as “1450” (unclear in the record), urging staff to confirm and consider whether pay or benefits should be changed to attract candidates.
The committee agreed to the shared spreadsheet approach and to receive the ongoing report in future meetings.
