Kittitas County commissioners adopted a proclamation declaring April 2026 National Child Abuse Prevention Month and urged residents, agencies and faith groups to prioritize programs that support children and families.
The proclamation, presented by the presiding commissioner (identified in the record as S2), cited national 2024 figures included in the proclamation text noting roughly 4,860,000 reports of abuse and neglect nationwide and 532,228 children confirmed as victims of maltreatment in that year. The board moved and approved the proclamation by voice vote.
Kate Sander, deputy director of Court Advocates for Children (CASA), told the board that CASA trains volunteers who support children in the foster-care system and provide continuity and court-informed recommendations during uncertain periods. "Our volunteers don't do this work alone," Sander said, adding that volunteers work with teachers, caregivers and medical providers to support each child's best interests.
Commissioners thanked CASA for its work and voiced unanimous support for the proclamation. The board recorded the item as approved and moved on to subsequent agenda items.
