Commissioners approve several appointments; declare Secure Your Load Day and Mental Health Awareness Month

At their May 11 meeting, Kitsap County commissioners approved a slate of volunteer appointments and proclamations, and recognized community advocates.
The board adopted a resolution appointing Shanae Skelton (District 2) to the Developmental Disabilities Advisory Board for a three‑year term. The Chair described Skelton’s lived experience and community service, noting she "lives independently with her cat Precious," works at St. Michael Medical Center and brings perspective from participating in Special Olympics; commissioners approved the appointment by voice vote.
Commissioners also appointed Colleen Muriglott and Jennifer Morrison to the Suquamish Community Advisory Council for three‑year terms ending May 31, 2029. Colleen spoke in person about neighborhood organizing, trail maintenance and emergency preparedness; staff thanked both appointees for volunteering.
The board approved appointing Marina Linville as Interim Clerk of the Board and thanked her for stepping into the role.
Sarah Champ of Public Works’ Solid Waste Division asked the board to proclaim June 6, 2026, as Secure Your Load Day to reduce crashes and roadside litter. Champ said the county’s outreach has distributed over 3,000 free straps, nets and tarps and cited local calls reporting debris: "In 2025, there were over 400 calls to 911 reporting debris on roads in Kitsap County." The board adopted the proclamation.
Human Services Director Doug Washburn introduced Jennifer and Steve Bridal, who shared their son Benjamin’s story during a proclamation designating May 2026 as Mental Health Awareness Month. The board thanked the family and approved the proclamation.
These actions were adopted by voice vote; staff said they will follow up with appointees and continue public outreach for the Secure Your Load campaign.
