Board approves $2.14 million in bid alternates; project remains under budget

The Whitnall School District board approved a package of bid alternates for facilities work tied to the district referendum and the 10-year improvement plan.
Committee members presented the alternates, saying legal counsel confirmed most items fit within the referendum scope and that the facilities and finance committee supported advancing the work into the construction plans. The alternates include upgraded flooring materials, entryway aesthetic changes (removal of a barrel roof at a main entry), audio upgrades in the high-school second gym, playground-surface improvements at Hills Corners and Edertton, and other site and building refinements.
A facilities presenter told trustees the total of the bid alternates before the board was $2,138,568. He said overall project funds remain healthy after owner- and contractor-side underspending and contingencies: after subtracting the alternates, the committee reported the program was "about a little over $1.5 million to the good." Trustees discussed which items should be base scope and which should be bid alternates (for example, painting vs. structural canopy replacement); the canopy over the walkway was discussed as a separate, later bid alternate because staff said structural repair is not urgent this summer but would be prioritized next summer.
Trustees also asked about signage uniformity across schools, accessibility concerns around the walkways and the scheduling of bid-alternate work. Staff said some alternates would proceed this construction season while other alternates would be scheduled as subsequent bid packages and that signage and canopy work would be reviewed for next-year bidding.
The board had a motion and second on 6A; the motion carried and the alternates were approved. Staff said they will finalize alternate scopes and update the board on the precise remaining contingency and schedule.
