The Southampton County School Board on June 9 reviewed a revised student handbook redesignated the 'Student Success Manual' but voted to delay final adoption until the board can incorporate pending state guidance and the incoming superintendent's introductory message.
Acting Superintendent Dr. Harris Mohammed told the board the document was renamed to focus on support and student growth rather than a compliance manual. “We wanted to make sure that the student success manual…is user friendly and our intentionality is to focus on achievement, opportunity, responsibility and support,” he said.
Board members raised the likelihood that the governor would release changes affecting cell-phone and dress-code policies in the coming weeks and said adopting the manual now could force the board to approve overlapping changes later. A motion to delay adoption until the next meeting — to allow the incoming superintendent to add an introduction and to await official state guidance — passed by voice vote.
Board members asked staff to incorporate feedback from principals and to reconcile procedural food/nutrition documents with formal policy language before the next presentation.
