San Bernardino County is now accepting partial payments on secured property taxes, county officials announced during a public briefing. "Hi, I'm Enson Mason, your auditor, controller, treasur tax collector," Mason said, introducing the program as a way to let homeowners make payments "anytime, day or night."
Mason said partial payments are intended to reduce financial stress and give taxpayers more control over timing and amounts. He cautioned that the new option does not stop penalties or interest if payment deadlines are missed: the first installment is due Nov. 1 with penalties after Dec. 10, and the second installment is due Feb. 1 with penalties after April 10. Mason also warned that partial payments do not prevent a property from becoming eligible for tax sale if payments default.
County staff provided instructions for paying online or in person and said the flexibility is meant to help residents avoid missed deadlines. Officials encouraged residents to plan payments around the statutory installment dates to avoid additional charges.
The announcement did not specify implementation details such as an exact start date for the partial-payment portal, whether automatic recurring payments will be supported, or how partial payments will be applied if multiple liens exist; those details were described as "not specified" during the briefing.
