Larimer County commissioners and staff discussed several transportation projects on June 8, emphasizing regional coordination on pedestrian improvements and the long‑term funding challenges for a bridge replacement at the Wellington I‑25 interchange.
Staff said CDOT and regional partners are moving forward on pedestrian improvements at the Malbury interchange and will present more details during a traffic safety update scheduled for late July. "CDOT informed us that they are moving forward on some pedestrian improvements at that interchange," staff said.
Commissioners asked whether CDOT could take a similar approach at the Wellington interchange. Staff said CDOT has placed the Wellington I‑25 preliminary interchange design and pedestrian crossing on the 10‑year plan for Region 4 and has identified $8 million for fiscal years through 2030 and another $8 million in planned funding for fiscal year 2031 and beyond, but the total project is estimated at about $65 million. Staff said the project could be phased, augmented with grant funding and partner contributions from municipalities that would benefit from the project.
Staff said the Wellington project also includes substantial storm‑water improvements and that phased design work or grant leveraging could accelerate pedestrian safety work ahead of a full bridge replacement.
