Alvin ISD approves names for four new campuses after close vote; committee says nearly 300 nominations considered

After discussion, trustees voted to accept the facility naming committee’s recommendations by a recorded result of four in favor, one against and two abstentions.
The naming committee — made up of two board members, administrators, staff and community representatives — presented the recommendations and the process. Committee co-presenters Selena Salter and Stephanie Jax Richtor said the nomination window ran April 13–24, 2026, the committee reviewed every submission against board policy CW Local, and that nearly 300 nominations (many duplicates) were considered. The committee said it unanimously recommended the names it presented to the board.
The committee’s recommendations were: - Elementary School No. 23 (Canara Creek): EMTT Miller Elementary School - Replacement elementary on Mustang Road (replacing Walt Disney Elementary and Stevenson Primary): Earl Humber Elementary - Junior High No. 10 (Canara Creek): Joan Young Junior High - Elementary School No. 24 (location TBD): Cecilia Jones Elementary
The committee explained it did not retain the Walt Disney Elementary name for the Mustang Road replacement because two existing school communities are merging and the committee preferred a namesake representing both communities.
Trustee discussion touched on process questions: when the last naming cycle occurred (committee said 2017) and how nominations were collected and reviewed. Trustee Robersonson proposed dividing the question to vote names separately; the motion did not succeed and the board proceeded with the single motion. The board’s final roll call recorded four in favor, one against and two abstaining.
Families of the recommended names were invited to stand and be recognized during the meeting. The committee emphasized that the selections honored long-serving educators and community leaders who have shaped Alvin ISD.
