County accepts $750,000 donation to expand sheriff’s wellness program

Sedgwick County commissioners on June 10 authorized the chairman to accept a $750,000 donation from the Unlikely Collaborators Foundation to expand the sheriff’s office health and wellness program.
Wendy Hmel, the Sedgwick County Sheriff’s Office health and wellness manager, said the county received $250,000 annually for three years (totaling $750,000) to sustain and expand services. The funds will be dedicated to trauma training for culturally competent mental‑health professionals, medical screening, embedded physical therapy and strength‑and‑conditioning programs, and additional targeted training to support early intervention and long‑term resilience among deputies and their families.
"These funds would be dedicated to four defined areas that build upon existing programming while enabling the introduction of new initiatives," Hmel said, listing trauma training, medical screening, physical therapy/conditioning and training. Commissioners praised the partnership and thanked the Unlikely Collaborators Foundation and local leader Liz Ko for the gift. The board voted to authorize acceptance of the donation and chair’s signature; the motion passed (recorded vote in the minutes was 4–0).
What’s next: The sheriff’s office will integrate the donated funds into its wellness programming and report back to the commission on implementation and outcomes as required by county practice.
