Farmington Elementary credits PBIS for drop in discipline referrals, flags math as an area to address

Farmington Elementary staff told the Garden City Board of Education that a focused push on Positive Behavioral Interventions and Supports (PBIS) and benchmark coaching produced meaningful declines in disciplinary incidents but left math performance as a priority for next year.
"We have almost 200 less ODRs this year than we did last year," Farmington presenter Bobby Robinson said while showing office-discipline referral and suspension charts for grades five and six. Robinson credited the district coaches and PBIS systems implemented this year, noting that changes such as monthly assemblies, postcards to parents, and in-classroom coaching contributed to the decline.
Robinson presented assessment data showing mixed results: while some grades saw strong spring achievement (he cited a sixth-grade achievement increase from 206 to 217), overall math scores were "kind of just staying steady" compared with stronger ELA gains after the district’s new ELA curriculum and benchmark work. He said action steps for improvement will include increased benchmark coaching, grade-level planning days, everyday math games, after-school tutoring, and support from a math interventionist.
Robinson also highlighted behavioral trends and interventions: the majority of suspensions and ODRs involved students putting their hands on one another; the school is prioritizing alternative discipline approaches and assemblies to address the issue without resorting to suspension whenever possible.
What’s next: Farmington plans to bring back grade-level planning days, continue benchmark coaching and instructional rounds, expand math-focused coaching, and emphasize attendance incentives and PBIS celebrations for the coming year.
