Staff summarized the themes received on note cards and said the most popular suggestion was "transportation through the ages," with other responses including geological time, a designated graffiti-tagging site and giraffes. Staff said the commission would continue to collect feedback at the farmers market and upcoming Summer Stage events on July 2 and in August.
A staff member described an intern-designed plan for a seasonal native garden representing Pride colors, with a paint-rocks activity tied to a Pride art event at the Depot the next evening at 7:30 p.m. The commission also discussed a potential mural and outdoor classroom at Cherry Valley Elementary to be used by all grade levels.
Commissioners compared smaller, deliverable projects (puzzle exchanges, temporary installations and trade sculptures) to larger concepts in the biennial art plan. They agreed to prioritize projects that can be completed in the near term and included community partnerships (for example, hiring local artists to run free classes rather than supplanting local arts organizations' revenue).
Staff also reviewed the summer events lineup, naming a July 9 country concert, an Abba tribute band night tied to a movie showing of Mamma Mia, and other planned performances including mariachi and a puppet show. The commission closed by noting logistics for youth-focused events and a planned splash day in August.
