Red Cliff, county outline commercial and housing projects as economic strategy

Red Cliff economic and community planner Rob Czypinski summarized the tribe’s diversification strategy at the March 4 Tribal Relations Committee meeting, calling for a stronger Red Cliff Business Development Corporation and a commercial development anchored by a new Buffalo Bay gas station and convenience store on the old Isle Vista site. Czypinski said a spring groundbreaking for the project is planned and described future phases that could include a visitor center, retail, and housing.
Brian Tochterman introduced himself as Bayfield County’s new executive director of economic development and said he intends to connect local entrepreneurs with resources and build trust in local economic planning. Doug Jennings said a 40-unit housing complex in Red Cliff is scheduled to open in June and that decisions about an Excel Energy substation location and a gas-line expansion should support future growth.
County Administrator Mark Abeles-Allison also reported hiring a half-time housing specialist and described an 8-home modular pocket neighborhood funded by CheqBUILT with Wilde Rivers Habitat for Humanity in which the county would retain ownership of the land to lower purchase prices for community buyers. No formal land transfers or funding approvals were recorded at the meeting.
