Chilton County Commission approves consent agenda, settlement, surplus auction and invoices; schedules work session

At its June meeting the commission approved the consent agenda (personnel reclassifications, precinct relocation, hazard mitigation plan updates and grant applications), ratified a settlement in Chilton County v. Hidalgo, approved surplus auctioning of old courthouse items and several vendor invoices, and set a special work session for June 16 at 1:00 p.m.
The Chilton County Commission approved a slate of routine measures, including a consent agenda and several standalone resolutions, during its regular meeting.
The consent agenda — approved by voice vote — included approval of minutes (May 26), the June 9 claims list, personnel reclassifications (including reclassification of Corey McCartney to full-time special operations captain and Forest Silas to full-time deputy sheriff), relocation of voting precinct 210 from Collins Chapel Baptist Church back to Collins Chapel Fire Department, allocation of three-year bond payments to debt service T-bills, notice of a June 23, 2026 public hearing on the FY2026 Community Development Block Grant, adoption of a revised state hazard mitigation plan, an animal-control grant application, transit department training closures in September, park repairs at Higgins Ferry Park, a free fishing day on June 13, and road department hires and reclassifications.
Separately, the commission approved a resolution to ratify a settlement agreement, mutual release and restricted covenant in the matter of Chilton County v. Daniel Hidalgo et al., case number CV 2025-900145.00. The commission also approved a request from Commissioner Bone to auction surplus items from the old courthouse via Pierce Auction, with proceeds deposited into courthouse funds.
Commissioner Childers moved to approve invoices from Justin Kennedy News; Commissioner Perkins seconded and the motion passed. Commissioners approved invoices from Thompson Tractor; the transcript records a single abstention was noted during that vote. The commission declared non-essential items at the old courthouse surplus and authorized them for auction.
During public comment, Robert Binyon asked commissioners for a $1,000 donation to help fund a Juneteenth parade and said he has a 501(c)(3) and paperwork in order. “I’m asking this commissioner if they’ll donate $1,000 to help us with that parade,” Binyon said. Binyon told the commission he had received varied police fee estimates for the event and asked for timely payment due to bank closures on the holiday.
The commission set a special work session for June 16 at 1:00 p.m. and then adjourned.
