Vice Mayor Lauren Sares told the council on June 9 that a recent fatality at the Baltimore Drive and Lake Parkway intersection has heightened community concerns about vehicle speed and pedestrian safety. She said an existing traffic signal was down and that the intersection’s proximity to freeway ramps and Lake Murray contributes to high speeds.
Vice Mayor Sares moved to direct staff to review the intersection for traffic‑safety improvement options and to report back with feasible measures; Council Member Suzuki seconded the motion. The council voted unanimously to carry out the review. Staff noted some limitations because the intersection abuts City of San Diego jurisdiction, and that possible actions will depend on interagency coordination and engineering analysis.
The direction is a study request rather than an ordinance or capital project approval; staff will return with recommendations after evaluating options and interjurisdictional constraints.
