The Adrian City Commission on June 8 narrowed its search for a new city administrator, advancing five of nine applicants to final interviews.
Ryan Dunlap, senior HR consultant with Yo HR Advisory, told commissioners the confidential process would use numbered candidates and a show-of-hands tally; he said the goal was typically to move three to five candidates forward. Commissioners then voted by hand to move candidates numbered 2, 3, 4, 5 and 9 into the next round for more in-depth interviews and a public meet-and-greet.
The decision followed a procedural review by Dunlap explaining that, for confidentiality, candidates would be referred to by number and that at least four of seven commission votes would be required to advance a candidate. Commissioners debated whether to keep a wider pool given the city's needs and the risk that candidates might accept other offers before final interviews.
Commissioners discussed logistics for final interviews on June 22, including whether to split sessions between morning and afternoon, allow some candidates to appear by Zoom, and hold a public meet-and-greet so residents can meet finalists. Dunlap recommended splitting interviews to permit breaks and staff-led site visits; commissioners asked staff to coordinate timing and availability.
No candidate names were discussed in open session due to confidentiality; Dunlap said the commission would notify those who advanced and those who did not. The commission’s selection clears the way for the next step of in‑person or virtual finalist interviews and public engagement before a hiring decision.
The commission then moved on to grant and other business.
