Porter approves contracted officers for July 4 weekend; police brief council on school safety grant and liaison plans

Chief Dicki briefed the council on May activity — 753 calls for service, 26 case reports, 10 arrests, 20 crash reports and 183 traffic stops — and requested permission to hire contracted officers from other agencies for the Fourth of July weekend. He said the town expects to cap payments at $1,800 for contractors this year, down from $3,500 in 2025, to cover additional coverage needs at the beach, the parade and other events.
Council members moved, seconded and approved the request to use contracted officers for the holiday weekend, with staff noting officers will use their own vehicles and equipment and that coverage will be coordinated by the deputy chief.
Deputy Chief Tom updated the council on partnerships with Discovery Charter School. He said the school has hired a new superintendent and plans to apply for the Indiana secured school safety grant (application window June 1–30). Discovery projects about 520 students in K–8 and about 600 daily building occupants next fall; Tom said the department has designated three officers as liaisons and provided active-threat training to school staff. He noted a successful history of joint safety meetings and that a formal SRO partnership would require further planning and agreement if the grant is awarded.
The council did not take formal action on an SRO partnership but recorded support for continued collaboration and for Discovery’s grant application.
