The Portsmouth School Committee voted June 9 to approve a contract for Tannon Longway to serve as assistant principal of assessment and instruction at Portsmouth Middle School. Dr. Vivera described Longway’s 25 years of service to the district in roles including teacher, literacy coach and coordinator, and the committee moved and seconded the contract. The tally recorded at the meeting was six in favor and one opposed.
After the vote, Longway addressed the committee: "I just want to say thank you for this opportunity and for the trust that you've placed in me. I'm incredibly grateful for the chance I've had this year to serve as both an intern and as a teacher on special assignment... I'm also looking forward to working alongside teachers to continue strengthening instructional practices and supporting high levels of learning for all students." The appointee emphasized strengthening communication and partnerships with parents and families.
The vote followed the personnel subcommittee’s review and a short discussion of Longway’s record of district leadership and improvement in ELA proficiency. The committee did not attach any additional conditions to the contract at the meeting.
